My Life Story:
I basically grew up surfing for my entire life. When I was about 6-years-old, one of my good friend’s mom was Margo Oberg, a three-time women’s ASP world champ, and she got us both into the sport.
We surfed all the time and were constantly trying to outdo each other, but in the end he had the genes and became a really talented waterman. So that’s how I got into surfing: schooled over razor-sharp Hawaiian reefs, taught by one of the best female surfers in the world…and yet I still remain a mediocre surfer. So as the whole pro surf thing wasn’t really going my way, (I entered a lot of contests and lost a lot of heats) I decided to focus on school and try and get a “real” job.
After graduating from the University of Hawaii, I found a job at Surfer magazine working as a copy editor and writing short articles here and there but still managing to surf my brain’s out. I’m very rarely happier than when I get out of the water after a good session. When I’m in the water, I always like to find my own peak, even if it means settling for a shittier wave. I guess in a way, that’s sort of a philosophy of mine.
I’m really stoked to work for The Ryde because at their core, they’re a group of surfers who care about the soul of the sport, what more could you ask for in a group of coworkers?
